The Decatur, Mt. Zion, Forsyth and Macon County Area
There is a rich sense of history associated with Decatur. Abraham Lincoln practiced law here, for instance, and the Chicago Bears got their start in 1918 as the Decatur Staley's. The Transfer House, formerly the hub of Decatur's street car routes, was moved to the city's Central Park in the mid-60's; today the Transfer House is considered a beloved Decatur landmark.
Over the years, Decatur and Macon County have developed a reputation for excellent recreational facilities and programs The area features 130 different festivals and events throughout the year, municipal summer band concerts, auto races at Macon Speedway, a variety of baseball games and much more.
Decatur Park District includes more than 48 parks covering more than 2,000 acres. Under the district umbrella are the airport, 63 ball diamonds, 5 award-winning public golf courses, bike trails, aquatic centers, dozens of tennis courts, playgrounds and pavilions, public gardens and even an equestrian center. The district also serves people with disabilities with its Special Recreation programs and is the host for Area 10 Special Olympics, for a five-county area.
